Definition: Fraction

A fraction is a numerical quantity that represents a part of a whole.

CISCE: Class 6

Structure of Fraction

A fraction is written as

Fraction = `"Numerator"/"Denominator"`

  • Numerator (top number): Indicates how many parts are taken.
  • Denominator (bottom number): Indicates the total number of equal parts the whole is divided into.

Understanding Parts of a Whole with Fractions

1. Dividing a Whole into Equal Parts:
If a quantity (like rice) is divided into 4 equal parts, each part is called one-fourth or `1/4` of the total quantity.
2. Subtracting Parts:
If 2 out of 5 parts of an apple are eaten, then 3 parts remain.
This is written as 'three-fifths', or `3/5`.
So, `3/5`, of the apple is left. 3. Understanding Fractions:
Numbers like `1/4` and `3/5` each represent a part of a whole. These are called fractions.

Simplifying Fractions (Lowest Terms)

A fraction is in lowest terms when the numerator and denominator have no common factor other than 1.

Steps:

  • Find the common factors of the numerator and denominator.

  • Divide both by the greatest common factor (GCF).

Examples:

Simplify  `12/18`

GCF = 6

`12/18` = `"12 ÷ 6" / "18 ÷ 6"` = `2/3`

Real-Life Applications

  • Food Sharing: If 1 pizza is cut into 8 slices and you eat 3, you ate `3/8` of the pizza.

  • Sports: If your team won 5 matches out of 8 played, you won `5/8` of the matches.

  • Measuring: Pouring `1/2` litre from a 1-litre bottle means you used half.

Key Points Summary

  • Fractions represent parts of a whole.

  • The numerator is the number of parts you have, and the denominator is the total number of equal parts.

  • The denominator is never zero!

  • Always divide the whole into equal parts before writing a fraction.

  • Simplify fractions when possible
