Introduction

Triangles are the strongest shapes! You see them everywhere, from giant pyramid walls to the strong support beams (trusses) holding up bridges and roofs. To be good builders or engineers, we need to know the different 'types' of triangles.

We classify triangles by looking at the lengths of their three sides.

Maharashtra State Board: Class 6

Classification of Triangles based on Sides

Types of Triangles  Diagram Definition Properties
Equilateral Triangle A triangle with all three sides equal - All sides are equal
- All angles are 60°
- Perfectly symmetrical
Isosceles Triangle A triangle with two equal sides - Two equal sides
- Two equal angles
Scalene Triangle A triangle with no two sides equal - All sides are different
- All angles are different
CISCE: Class 6

Key Points Summary

  • Equilateral: 3 equal sides, 3 equal angles (60°)

  • Isosceles: 2 equal sides, 2 equal angles (base angles).

  • Scalene: 0 equal sides, 0 equal angles (all sides and angles are different).

  • The sum of all interior angles in any triangle (Equilateral, Isosceles, or Scalene) is always 180°.
