Definition: Constants

A constant is a fixed value that does not change.

  • Examples: 5, −7, 256

CISCE: Class 6

Definition: Variables

A variable is a symbol, usually a letter (like x, y, or z), representing an unknown or changeable numerical value in an equation or an algebraic expression.

Identifying Terms

Expression Constant(s) Variable(s) Term Type
7 7 - Constant term
4x + 3 3 x Variable term
5 + y − 2z 5 y, z Mixed

Real-Life Application

Problem: In the image below, the distance between the house and the school is 300 metres. There is a shop between the school and the house, and the distance between the shop and the house is 190 metres. The question is:
What is the distance between the school and the shop?

Solution:

  • Let x = distance from school to shop (unknown value)

  • 190 m = distance from shop to house (known constant)

  • 300 m = total distance from school to house (known constant)

Write the equation: x + 190 = 300

  1. Subtract 190 from both sides: x + 190 - 190 = 300 - 190

  2. Simplify: x = 110

  3. Check: 110 + 190 = 300

Answer: The distance between the school and shop is 110 metres.

CISCE: Class 6

Key Points Summary

  • A term is constant if it has no letters.
  • A term is variable if it contains at least one letter.
  • Any expression combining constants and variables is a variable expression, since its value varies with the variable.
