Introduction

An algebraic term is a number, a letter, or a combination of both; mastering term types and recognizing like versus unlike terms builds a strong foundation for simplifying expressions.

term can be:

  • constant: a fixed number with no letter (e.g., 5, –12)

  • variable: a letter representing a number (e.g., x, y)

  • mixed term: a number and a letter together (e.g., 4x, 6 ÷ y)

CISCE: Class 6

Parts of an Algebraic Expression

The following image breaks down the expression 5x − 3 into its components: coefficient, variable, constant, and terms.

  • Terms: Parts of an expression separated by addition or subtraction.

  • Variable: An unknown value represented by a letter in an algebraic expression.

  • Constant: The term in an algebraic expression that never changes.

  • Coefficient: A number multiplied by the variable.

CISCE: Class 6

Definition: Like Terms

Terms having the same literal part (same variables with the same powers) are called like terms.

For example:

xy, 5xy, -4xy, etc. are like terms

CISCE: Class 6

Definition: Unlike Terms

The terms that do not have the same literal coefficients are called unlike terms.

For example:

6a, 6ab and 6ac are unlike terms.
