Definition: Point

Point: A point is a mark of position. It has neither length, width, nor thickness and occupies no space. It is usually denoted by a capital letter.

Fundamental Concept of a Point

1. Visual Representation:

  • A point can be represented by marking a tiny dot on paper using a sharp pencil.
  • The sharper the pencil tip, the thinner and more precise the dot will be.

2. Ideal Representation:

  • In geometry, points are considered infinitely small and dimensionless.
  • The dots used for representation should be as thin as possible to closely resemble an ideal point.

3. Identification of Points:

  • Points are usually denoted by capital letters such as A, B, and C.
  • When marked on paper, they are referred to as Point A, Point B, and Point C.

Definition: Collinear Points

Three or more points that all lie on the same straight line

CISCE: Class 6

Definition: Non-Collinear Points

Three or more points that do not lie on the same straight line.

CISCE: Class 6

Real-Life Examples

Points:

  • The sharp tip of a needle.

  • A tiny star in the night sky.

Collinear Points:

  • Imagine runners standing perfectly in one straight lane on a racetrack. They are collinear

Non-Collinear Points:

  • Imagine three friends standing randomly in a field. You cannot draw a single straight line through all of them.

Key Points Summary

  • A Point shows only position and has no dimension (no length, width, or thickness).

  • Points are always named using capital letters (e.g., Point Z).

  • Collinear Points are three or more points that lie on the same straight line.

  • Non-Collinear Points are three or more points that do not lie on the same straight line.
