Introduction

square is a shape with four equal sides and four right angles. The area of a square means the total surface inside its boundary.

The unit of area depends on the length unit:

  • If the side is in centimetres (cm), the area will be in square centimetres (cm2).
  • If the side is in meters (m), the area will be in square meters (m2).

CISCE: Class 6

Formula: Area of a Square

Area of square = side × side

                          = s × s

                          = s2

Area of square = (side)²

 ⇒ its side = \[\sqrt{Area}\]

CISCE: Class 6

Example 1

Area of a square = side × side = (Side)2

Let us now consider a square of side 4 cm

= 4 × 4 sq. cm.

= 16 sq. cm.

It covers 16 squares i.e., the area of the square is 16 sq. cm.

CISCE: Class 6

Example 2

If a square has an area of 16 cm², what is the length of its side?

Using the formula in reverse:

s \[\sqrt{16}\]

= 4 cm

The side of the square is 4 cm.

CISCE: Class 6

Key Points Summary

  • Formula: Area of a square = s2, where ss is the length of one side
  • Units matter: Always include the correct square units (cm², m², km², etc.)

  • Visual understanding: A square can be divided into smaller unit squares to visualize area

Example Question 1

Find the area of a square plot of side 8 m.

Side of the square = 8 m

Area of the square= side × side

= 8 m × 8 m

= 64 sq m.

Example Question 2

Bob wants to cover the floor of a room 3 m wide and 4 m long by squared tiles. If each square tile is of side 0.5 m, then find the number of tiles required to cover the floor of the room.

Total area of tiles must be equal to the area of the floor of the room.
Length of the room = 4 m
Breadth of the room = 3 m

Area of the floor = length × breadth = 4 m × 3 m = 12 sq m

Area of one square tile = side × side = 0.5 m × 0.5 m = 0.25 sq m

Number of tiles required = `"Area of the floor"/"Area of one tile" = 12/0.25 = 1200/25` = 48 tiles.
