Definition: Lorentz Force

The total force experienced by a charged particle moving with velocity \[\vec v\] in the presence of both an electric field \[\vec E\] and a magnetic field \[\vec B\] simultaneously.

CISCE: Class 12

Formula: Lorentz Force

\[\vec{F}=q\vec{E}+q(\vec{v}\times\vec{B})\]

Symbol Meaning SI Unit
q Charge of the particle coulomb (C)
\[\vec E\] Electric field intensity V/m or N/C
\[\vec v\] Velocity of the particle m/s
\[\vec B\] Magnetic field intensity tesla (T)
\[\vec F\] Net (Lorentz) force newton (N)
CISCE: Class 121

Concept Breakdown

Electric Force on a Charge

  • Acts on the charge whether it is stationary or moving.

  • Direction: along \[\vec E\] for positive charge, opposite for negative charge.

  • Formula: \[\vec F_E\] = q\[\vec E\]

Magnetic Force on a Charge

  • Acts only when the particle is moving.
  • Direction: perpendicular to both \[\vec v\] and \[\vec B\] (right-hand rule).
  • Formula: \[\vec F_B\] = q(\[\vec v\] × \[\vec B\])
  • Does no work on the particle — it changes direction, not speed.

Crossed Electric and Magnetic Fields

When \[\vec E\] and \[\vec B\] act perpendicular to each other and to \[\vec v\], the particle can travel undeflected if the electric and magnetic forces balance.

Condition for no deflection:

  • qE = qvB ⟹ v = \[\frac {E}{B}\]

This principle is the basis of a velocity selector, used in mass spectrometers to filter particles of a specific velocity before measuring their specific charge q/m.

Example

Problem: An electron is accelerated through a potential difference of 2.0 kV and enters a magnetic field of 0.15 T.

Step Working
Given V = 2.0 kV, B = 0.15 T
Step 1: Find speed \[\frac {1}{2}\]mv2 = qV ⟹ v = \[\sqrt {\frac {2qV}{m}}\]
Step 2: Transverse entry r = \[\frac {mv}{qB}\] ≈ 1 mm
Step 3: 30° angled entry r = \[\frac {mv sin ⁡30°}{qB}\] ≈ 0.5 mm
Result Circular path (1 mm radius) for perpendicular entry; helical path (0.5 mm radius) for 30° entry
