Introduction

All substances show magnetic properties.

For example, an iron nail brought near a pole of a bar magnet is strongly attracted and sticks to it. Steel, cobalt and nickel show similar behaviour. Such substances are called ferromagnetic substances.

Some substances are only weakly attracted by a magnet, whereas some are repelled by it. These are called paramagnetic and diamagnetic substances respectively.

Key Point: All substances—solids, liquids and gases—fall into one of these three classes:

  1. Diamagnetic substances
  2. Paramagnetic substances
  3. Ferromagnetic substances

Definition: Diamagnetic Substances

Some substances, when placed in a magnetic field, are feebly magnetised in a direction opposite to the direction of the magnetising field. When brought close to a pole of a powerful magnet, they are somewhat repelled away from the magnet.

Such substances are called diamagnetic substances, and their magnetism is called diamagnetism.

Definition: Paramagnetic Substances

Some substances, when placed in a magnetic field, are feebly magnetised in the direction of the magnetising field. When brought close to a pole of a powerful magnet, they are attracted towards the magnet.

Such substances are called paramagnetic substances, and their magnetism is called paramagnetism.
