Solution

Scalar chain refers to the line of authority for the chain of superior ranking from the highest to the lowest. Fayol had insisted upon using this chain in every organisation. All information must pass through every level without skipping any one of them.

In the above figure, A is the head of the organisation with two separate departments. One of the departments consists of B, C, and D, and the other department consists of E, F and G. B and E are at the same level, followed by C and F, and D and G. If D wanted to contact G, the line of communication would be D-C-B-A-E-F-G. If this chain of communication is broken, it will lead to a communication gap in the organisation.

At times it may cause a lot of delay in passing out information, which will eventually lead to delay in decision-making. To resolve this issue, Fayol has suggested a gangplank, which is a shortcut chain in which D can directly contact G.

On its Founders’ Day, a stage performance had to be put up. A committee of ten prefects was constituted to plan different aspects of the function. They all decided to use recycled paper for decoration. As there was a spirit of unity and harmony and all members supported each other with mutual trust and belongingness, the programme was systematically planned and executed. Arvind, one of the prefects, realised that unknowingly the group had applied one of the principles of management while planning and executing the programme. He was so inspired by the success of the function, that he asked his father to apply the same principle in his business. His father replied that he was already using this principle.
