Introduction

Many physical quantities can be fully described using just a number and a unit. However, some physical quantities require both magnitude (size) and direction to be completely understood.

If someone walks 5 km, you know the distance, but you don't know where they ended up. If you're told they walked 5 km north, you now know their displacement (final position relative to the starting point). The direction makes all the difference!

This is why we divide all physical quantities into two types: scalars and vectors.

Scalars and Vectors

Scalars are physical quantities that have only magnitude. They are described by a number and a unit. Examples: mass (5 kg), temperature (25°C), speed (60 km/h), distance, time, energy, work done.

Vectors are physical quantities that have both magnitude and direction. They are shown using arrows or special notation. Examples: displacement, velocity, acceleration, force, weight.

Scalar vs Vector

Feature Scalar Vector
Magnitude Yes, only Yes ✓
Direction No Yes ✓
How to write Number + unit (e.g., 10 kg) Arrow notation: \[\vec v\] or \[\overrightarrow {AB}\]
Addition Simple math (5 + 3 = 8) Use the triangle or parallelogram law
Zero quantity Zero (0 kg = no mass) Zero vector (zero magnitude, any direction)
Zero Quantity Zero value only (0 unit). The zero vector has zero magnitude but an arbitrary direction.

Key Points to Remember

  • Distance vs Displacement: Distance (5 km) is scalar; displacement (5 km north) is vector.
  • Speed vs Velocity: Speed (60 km/h) is scalar; velocity (60 km/h north) is vector.
  • Vectors add differently: You cannot simply add vectors like scalars. A 5 N force east + 5 N force north ≠ 10 N!
