Reaction of Carbon with Oxygen:

1. Aim:  To study the reaction of carbon with oxygen and observe the changes in the released gas and its effect on litmus paper.

2. Requirements: coal, matchbox, moist blue litmus paper.

3. Procedure

  • Ignite a piece of coal using a matchbox.
  • Hold a moist blue litmus paper over the gas released during the combustion of coal.
  • Observe the changes in the litmus paper and note the reaction of coal with the gas in the air.

Reaction of carbon with oxygen

4. Conclusion: The coal reacts with oxygen from the air, forming carbon dioxide (CO₂). The moist blue litmus paper turns red, indicating the presence of an acidic gas (CO₂). The chemical reaction occurring is C+O₂→CO₂.This experiment demonstrates that carbon reacts with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide, which is acidic in nature.

Reaction of limewater with Carbon dioxide:

1. Aim: To observe the reaction between exhaled air and limewater and understand the chemical process involved.

2. Requirements: test tube, straw, and freshly prepared limewater.

3. Procedure

  • Take freshly prepared limewater in a test tube.
  • Blow air into the limewater using a straw for some time.
  • Observe any changes in the limewater during the process.

Reaction of limewater with CO₂

4. Conclusion: The limewater turns milky after blowing air into it. This change occurs because the carbon dioxide (CO₂) in exhaled air reacts with the calcium hydroxide (limewater) to form calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), which is insoluble and causes the milky appearance. The chemical reaction is Ca(OH)₂ + CO₂ → CaCO₃ + H₂O. This experiment demonstrates the presence of carbon dioxide in exhaled air.
