Molecular Mass:

Molecular mass is the total mass of all the atoms in a single molecule of a substance. It is calculated by adding up the atomic masses of each atom in the molecule. The unit Dalton (u) expresses molecular mass, just like atomic mass does.

For example, to find the molecular mass of water (H₂O):

  1. The atomic mass of hydrogen () is 1 u, and there are 2 hydrogen atoms.
  2. The atomic mass of oxygen () is 16 u, and there is 1 oxygen atom.
  3. The molecular mass of water is: (2×1)+(1×16)=18 u

Molecular mass = sum of constituent atomic masses
(Molecular mass of H₂O) = (Atomic mass of H) × 2 + (Atomic mass of O) × 1
