Maharashtra State Board: Class 7

Introduction:

A cloudburst occurs when a large amount of water vapour collects in rain clouds. Sometimes, hot air near the ground causes rainwater to evapourate and return to the clouds, increasing the vapour inside them. When the vapour condenses quickly, it causes sudden and very heavy rainfall over a small area, with rain falling at 100 mm per hour or more. This sudden rain is called a cloudburst and can cause flooding in the affected region.

Maharashtra State Board: Class 7

Causes of Cloudburst:

  • High temperatures near the ground cause rainwater to vaporise and return to the clouds.
  • The clouds fill with too much water vapour.
  • Rapid condensation causes sudden and heavy rainfall over a small area.

Prevention of Damage from Cloudbursts:

  • Monitor weather conditions to give warnings in advance.
  • Build drainage systems to manage heavy rainwater.
  • Avoid construction in flood-prone areas.
  • Plant more trees to reduce soil erosion and control water flow.
