Mitochondria are known as the powerhouses of the cell. It has 2 coverings. The outer membrane is porous, while the inner membrane is deeply folded
- These folds increase the surface area for ATP-generating chemical reactions. The energy required for various chemical activities needed for life is released by mitochondria in the form of ATP molecules.
- Mitochondria have their own DNA and ribosomes. Therefore, mitochondria are able to make some of their own proteins.
- ATP (Adenosine triphosphate): ATP is known as the energy currency of the cell. The body uses energy stored in ATP for making new chemical compounds and for mechanical work.

- Structure - Double membrane-bound organelle. The outer membrane is smooth; the inner membrane has infoldings called cristae. Inner space is called the matrix.
- Shape & Size - Sausage-shaped or cylindrical. Diameter: 0.2–1.0 µm; Length: 1.0–4.1 µm.
- Function - Site of aerobic respiration; produces energy as ATP. Called the 'Powerhouse of the Cell'.
- Matrix Contents - Contains circular DNA, RNA molecules, and 70S ribosomes for protein synthesis.
