प्रश्न
What would be the molar concentration of human DNA in a human cell?
Advertisements
उत्तर
Molar concentration is the number of moles of solute in a solution divided by its volume, given in litres.
The average weight of a DNA base pair = 650 daltons (1 dalton equals the mass of a single hydrogen atom or 1.67 × 10−24 grams)
The molecular weight of a double-stranded DNA molecule = Total no. of base pairs × 650 daltons.
The human genome is 3.3 × 109 base pairs in length.
Hence, the weight of the human genome
= 3.3 × 109 base pair × 650 Daltons
= 3.59 × 10−12 gm
The molar concentration of DNA can be calculated accordingly.

| Oil spill is a major environmental issue. It has been found that different strains of Pseudomonas bacteria have genes to break down the four major groups of hydrocarbons in oil. Trials are underway to use different biotechnological tools to incorporate these genes and create a genetically engineered strain of Pseudomonas - a ‘super-bug’, to break down the four major groups of hydrocarbons in oil. Such bacteria might be sprayed onto surfaces polluted with oil to clean thin films of oil. |
