Solution

Forced Vibrations Resonant vibrations
These are vibrations of a body under an external periodic force of frequency different than the body's natural frequency. These are vibrations of a body under an external periodic force of frequency exactly equal to the natural frequency of the body.
The amplitude of the vibration is usually small. The amplitude of vibration is very large.
The body's vibrations are not in phase with the external periodic force. The vibrations of the body are in phase with the external periodic force.
These vibrations last very short after the periodic force has ceased to act. These vibrations last long after the periodic force has ceased to act.

In following figure shows  A, B, C and D are four pendulums suspended from the same elastic string XY. Lengths of pendulum A and D are equal, while the length of pendulum B is smaller and the pendulum C is longer. The pendulum A is set into vibration.

A vibrating tuning fork, held over an air column of a given length with its one end closed, produces a loud audible sound. Name the phenomenon responsible for it and explain the observation.

When a body vibrates under a periodic force, the vibrations of the body are ______.

Explain the phenomenon of resonance giving examples.

With which of the following frequencies does a tuning fork of frequency 256 Hz resonate? 288 Hz, 314 Hz, 333 Hz, 512 Hz.

A rifle shot is fired in a valley between two parallel walls. The echo from one wall is heard in 3 s and the echo from the other wall is heard 3 s later. If the velocity of sound at 00c is 330 ms-1 and the temperature in the valley is 100c, calculate the width of the valley. For every 10c rise in temperature, the velocity of sound increase by 0.61 ms-1.
