इलियड इलियम या ट्रॉय की कहानी है, जो एजियन से काला सागर तक जाने वाले संकीर्ण समुद्र के पास एशिया माइनर में एक समृद्ध व्यापारिक शहर है। यह वाणिज्य और कृषि दोनों के लिए अच्छी स्थिति में था। शहर के सामने समुद्र था जिस पर ट्रॉय के जहाज सामान और अनाज ले जाते थे। पीछे माउंट इडा की ऊँची चोटी थी, जहाँ से कई नदियाँ और झरने बहते थे। पहाड़ियों के बीच की घाटियाँ अच्छी तरह से पानी वाली और उपजाऊ थीं, उपजाऊ खेतों में मकई उगती थी और मवेशी घास के मैदानों की समृद्ध घास खाते थे जबकि भेड़ें पहाड़ियों की ढलानों पर चरती थीं।
अपने शहर के चारों ओर ट्रोजन ने एक मजबूत दीवार बनाई थी ताकि कोई दुश्मन समुद्र से उन पर हमला न कर सके। दीवार इतनी चौड़ी थी कि लोग उस पर खड़े हो सकते थे, बैठ सकते थे और चल सकते थे। बड़े-बड़े द्वार खुले थे, और लोग बाहर समुद्र के किनारे जा सकते थे और अपनी इच्छानुसार अंदर आ सकते थे। परन्तु युद्ध के समय द्वार बन्द कर दिये जायेंगे; और फिर शहर एक मजबूत किले की तरह था, जो सभी हमलों से काफी सुरक्षित था, इसके चारों ओर की दीवारों के साथ-साथ पीछे की पहाड़ियों से भी सुरक्षित था।
इस प्रकार, ट्रॉय एक मजबूत शहर था, इसकी दीवारों द्वारा दृढ़ता से संरक्षित और इसके बहादुर सैनिकों द्वारा दृढ़ता से बचाव किया गया था। लेकिन ग्रीस के सभी राजाओं और नायकों ने ट्रोजन के खिलाफ युद्ध की घोषणा कर दी थी, क्योंकि ट्रॉय के एक राजकुमार पेरिस ने ग्रीक राजा मेनेलॉस की पत्नी हेलेन को अपने साथ भागने के लिए मना लिया था। वह उसे ट्रॉय ले आया था। यूनानी लोग मेनेलॉस के साथ किए गए अन्याय का बदला ट्रॉय से लेना चाहते थे। वे ट्रॉय के लिए रवाना हुए और शहर की घेराबंदी कर दी। ट्रोजन ने भी कड़ा संघर्ष किया और घेराबंदी दस वर्षों तक जारी रही।
लड़ाई रोज़ होती रही, लेकिन घेराबंदी ख़त्म नहीं हुई। एक ओर, यूनानी शहर पर कब्ज़ा नहीं कर सकते थे, और दूसरी ओर ट्रोजन उन्हें दूर जाने के लिए मजबूर नहीं कर सकते थे। हर दिन ट्रोजन अपने फाटकों से बाहर आते थे, और यूनानी अपने तंबू और जहाजों से बाहर आते थे, और लड़ाई चलती रहती थी। कभी-कभी दोनों सेनाओं के बीच बड़े युद्ध होते थे। कभी-कभी दो महान नायकों के बीच एकल लड़ाई होती थी। कभी-कभी ट्रोजन इसमें बेहतर होते थे और कभी-कभी यूनानी। लेकिन फिर भी लड़ाई जारी रही.
युद्ध के दौरान दोनों पक्षों के महान नायक मारे गये। नौ वर्षों तक अपने शहर की रक्षा का नेतृत्व करने के बाद, बहादुर हेक्टर को आख़िरकार अकिलिस ने मार डाला, जिसका कोई भी विरोध नहीं कर सका। लेकिन बाद में अकिलिस खुद एक ज़हरीले तीर से मारा गया जो उसकी एड़ी में घुस गया था, जो उसके शरीर का एकमात्र हिस्सा था जहाँ वह घायल हो सकता था। इसके बाद, पेरिस स्वयं भी एक ज़हरीले तीर से मारा गया। ट्रोजन अपने शहर में बंद होने से थक गए थे, और यूनानी अपने घरों को फिर से देखने के लिए उत्सुक थे। लेकिन फिर भी लड़ाई जारी है पर चला गया।

Why? : Form groups of five. Choose a familiar character from any one of the epics you know. One person from the group plays the role of that character. Others in the group frame questions related to that character’s life. The condition is that all the questions should begin with ‘Why ... ?’. They interview the character using these ‘Why-?’ questions. Practice and present the interview in the classroom.
How?: Follow the above procedure. Now all questions should begin with ‘How-?’
