Solution

Application of Newton’s law of gravitation are:

  1. Dimensions of the heavenly bodies can be measured using the gravitation law. Mass of the Earth, the radius of the Earth, acceleration due to gravity, etc., can be calculated with higher accuracy.
  2. Helps in discovering new stars and planets.
(Hi) Helps to explain germination of roots is due to the property of geotropism which is the property of a root responding to gravity.
  3. One of the irregularities in the motion of stars is called ‘Wobble’ leads to the disturbance in the motion of a planet nearby. In this condition, the mass of the star can be calculated using the law of gravitation.
  4. Helps to predict the path of the astronomical bodies.

Different points in earth are at slightly different distances from the sun and hence experience different forces due to gravitation. For a rigid body, we know that if various forces act at various points in it, the resultant motion is as if a net force acts on the c.m. (centre of mass) causing translation and a net torque at the c.m. causing rotation around an axis through the c.m. For the earth-sun system (approximating the earth as a uniform density sphere).
