- Government expenditure on education as a share of total government expenditure rose from 7.92% (1952) to 16.54% (2020).
- As a share of GDP, it rose from 0.64% (1952) to 4.47% (2020)
- Growth over this period has been uneven.
- The Education Commission (1964–66) recommended spending 6% of GDP on education.
