Authority refers to the power to give commands and directions to subordinates. Herein, power is given to decide what activities are to be done and by whom. On the other hand, responsibility refers to the obligation to complete the assigned task within the stipulated time. According to this principle, managers should keep a balance between authority and responsibility.

She has divided the work in smaller units and each employee is well trained to perform his/her task efficiently. The sales persons are allowed to close a deal with a buyer by giving a maximum of 5 percent discount, whereas the decision to give any further discount rests with Aditi as the final authority.
