Sustainable development aims at promoting the kind of development that minimises environmental problems and meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of the future generation to meet their own needs.

Key Strategies for Sustainable Development
- Use of non-conventional energy to reduce problems of thermal and big hydro power (CO₂, fly ash, forest loss, disturbed river flow).
- LPG and gobar gas in rural areas to cut deforestation and air pollution and to get clean fuel plus organic fertiliser from slurry.
- CNG in urban public transport (Delhi and other cities) to significantly lower air pollution and make air cleaner.
- Wind power in high wind-speed areas using wind mills/turbines to generate electricity without adverse environmental impact.
- Solar power through photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight into electricity, useful in remote/costly grid areas and totally free from pollution; India is also leading ISA.
- Mini-hydel plants on perennial mountain streams to generate local, environment-friendly power and avoid transmission towers and loss.
- Traditional knowledge and practices (agriculture, healthcare, housing, transport; Ayurveda, Unani, Tibetan, folk systems; herbal products) to protect environment and rural heritage.
