Basic Classification

National income aggregates are classified on the basis of:

  • Domestic and National
  • Gross and Net
  • Market Prices and Factor Cost

Thus, there are eight basic national income aggregates.

CBSE: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12

1. Gross Domestic Product at Market Prices (GDPMP)

  • Market value of all final goods and services produced within the domestic territory during a year.
  • Includes production by residents and non-residents.
  • Being Gross, it includes Depreciation (Consumption of Fixed Capital).
CBSE: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12

Formula: Gross Domestic Product at Market Prices (GDPMP)

GDPMP = C + I + G + (X − M)

CBSE: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12

2. Gross Domestic Product at Factor Cost (GDPFC)

  • Value of goods and services produced within the domestic territory measured at factor cost.
  • Measures income earned by factors of production.
  • Traditional aggregate.
CBSE: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12

Formula: Gross Domestic Product at Factor Cost (GDPFC)

GDPFC = GDPMP − Net Indirect Taxes (NIT)

CBSE: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12

3. Net Domestic Product at Market Prices (NDPMP)

  • GDP after deducting depreciation.
  • Shows the net availability of goods and services after replacing worn-out capital.
CBSE: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12

Formula: Net Domestic Product at Market Prices (NDPMP)

NDPMP = GDPMP − Depreciation

CBSE: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12

4. Net Domestic Product at Factor Cost (NDPFC)

  • Income earned by factors of production within the domestic territory after deducting depreciation.
  • Also called Domestic Factor Income.
CBSE: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12

Formula: Net Domestic Product at Factor Cost (NDPFC)

NDPFC = GDPFC − Depreciation

OR

NDPFC = NDPMP − Net Product Taxes − Net Production Taxes

CBSE: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12

5. Gross National Product at Market Prices (GNPMP)

  • Market value of all final goods and services produced by normal residents, whether in India or abroad.
  • Includes Net Factor Income from Abroad (NFIA).
  • NFIA may be positive or negative.
CBSE: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12

Formula: Gross National Product at Market Prices (GNPMP)

GNPMP = GDPMP + NFIA

CBSE: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12

6. Gross National Product at Factor Cost (GNPFC)

  • Gross national product measured at factor cost.
  • Measures factor incomes earned by normal residents.
CBSE: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12

Formula: Gross National Product at Factor Cost (GNPFC)

GNPFC = GNPMP − Net Indirect Taxes

OR

GNPFC = GNPMP − Net Product Taxes − Net Production Taxes

CBSE: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12

7. Net National Product at Market Prices (NNPMP)

  • GNP after deducting depreciation.
  • Measures the net output available for consumption and investment.
CBSE: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12

Formula: Net National Product at Market Prices (NNPMP)

NNPMP = GNPMP − Depreciation

OR

NNPMP = NDPMP + NFIA

CBSE: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12

8. Net National Product at Factor Cost (NNPFC) / National Income (NI)

  • Sum of factor incomes earned by normal residents during a year.
  • Considered the best measure of National Income.
CBSE: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12

Formula: Net National Product at Factor Cost (NNPFC) / National Income (NI)

NNPFC = GNPFC − Depreciation

OR

NNPFC = NDPFC + NFIA

OR

NNPFC = NNPMP − Net Product Taxes − Net Production Taxes

CBSE: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12

Gross Value Added (GVA) Aggregates

Aggregate Relationship
GVA at Market Prices = GDP at Market Prices
GVA at Basic Prices = GVA at Market Prices − Net Product Taxes
GVA at Factor Cost = GVA at Basic Prices − Net Production Taxes
CBSE: Class 12
CISCE: Class 12

Key Points: National Income Aggregates

  • National income aggregates are classified as Domestic/National, Gross/Net, and Market Price/Factor Cost, giving 8 aggregates.
  • Gross = Includes Depreciation
  • Net = Gross − Depreciation
  • Domestic = Within Domestic Territory
  • National = Domestic + NFIA
  • Market Price = Factor Cost + Taxes − Subsidies
  • Factor Cost = Income received by Factors of Production
  • NNPFC (National Income) is the best measure of national income.
  • CBSE (post-2015) highlights GVA at Basic Prices and GDP at Market Prices instead of GDP at Factor Cost.
