Introduction

Utility is the want-satisfying power of a commodity or service; it explains why goods are demanded and consumed.
Utility differs from pleasure, usefulness, and satisfaction and is subjective to each person and circumstance.

CISCE: Class 12

Definition: Utility

  1. “Utility is the ability of a good to satisfy a want.” (Prof. Hibdon)
  2. “Utility may be the quality which makes a thing desirable.” (J.S. Nicholson)
Maharashtra State Board: Class 11

Features

  1. Relative Concept: Utility shifts according to time and place. Example: Woollens have more utility in winter; textbooks are most useful near exams.

  2. Subjective Concept: Utility changes by person — due to habits, preferences, or profession. A cricket bat is more useful to a player than to a teacher.

  3. Ethically Neutral: Utility does not judge right or wrong. A knife gives utility whether used for cooking or harm.

  1. Different from Usefulness: Milk is both useful and has utility; liquor might have utility for some but is not useful for health.

  1. Different from Pleasure: An injection may not please but it cures, thus giving utility.

  1. Utility vs Satisfaction: Utility is the reason to consume (thirst for water); satisfaction is relief after drinking.

  1. Not Exactly Measured: Utility is subjective and cannot be precisely counted. We only know if it’s positive, zero, or negative (disutility).

  1. Multi-purpose: Electricity lights homes, runs fans, and charges phones — all at the same time.

  1. Depends on Want Intensity: Stronger the need, the greater the utility (a hungry student values food most).

  1. Basis of Demand: People only demand what gives them utility (medicines for the sick).
