Meaning

  • Worker-Population Ratio: The proportion of population that is actively contributing to the production of goods and services of a country.
  • Population: The total number of people who reside in a particular locality at a particular point of time.
CBSE: Class 12

Worker-Population Ratio

  • It is the main indicator used for analysing the employment situation in a country.
  • A higher ratio → greater engagement of people in economic activities.
  • A medium or low ratio → a very high proportion of the population is not directly involved in economic activities.
CBSE: Class 12

Rural vs. Urban Participation

Aspect Rural Urban
Worker-population ratio ~45.6 (higher) ~38.9 (lower)
Education access Limited; many drop out mid-way Better access to schools, colleges, training
Employment opportunities Fewer; economic need drives participation Varied; people seek jobs matching qualifications
Reason for higher/lower participation Cannot afford to stay at home Many can afford to study and wait for suitable jobs
CBSE: Class 12

Worker-Population Ratio in India, 2023–24

Sex Total Rural Urban
Men 56.4 56.3 56.4
Women 30.7 34.8 20.7
Total 43.7 45.6 38.9

Key observations from the table:

  • Men have significantly higher participation than women across all regions.
  • The gender gap is widest in urban areas (56.4 for men vs. 20.7 for women).
  • For every 100 urban females, only about 19 are engaged in economic activities.
  • In rural areas, about 30 out of every 100 women participate in the employment market.

Reasons for Lower Participation of Women

  • Families with high male incomes discourage women from taking up jobs.
  • Many household activities done by women are not recognised as productive work.
  • This narrow definition of work leads to underestimation of the number of women workers.
  • Women engaged in unpaid household work and family farm work are not counted as workers.
CBSE: Class 12

Key Points: Participation of People in Employment

  • Worker-population ratio measures the share of population actively contributing to production of goods and services.
  • Calculated as: (Total Workers ÷ Total Population) × 100.
  • Rural areas have a higher worker-population ratio (~45.6) compared to urban areas (~38.9).
  • Men participate far more than women; the gap is sharpest in urban areas.
  • Low access to education and economic compulsion are key drivers of rural participation.
  • Unpaid domestic and farm work done by women is excluded from official work counts, leading to underestimation of women workers.
