Question

An element L consists of molecules.

  1. Which type of bond is present in the particles that make up L?
  2. When L is heated with iron metal, it forms a compound FeL. What chemical term would you use to describe change undergone by L?

Solution

  1. Covalent bonding is present in L as the bond is formed between the same atoms.
  2. On heating, Fe undergoes oxidation and loses two electrons as follows:
    \[\ce{Fe - 2^{e^-} -> Fe^{2+}}\]

    L takes up two electrons and undergoes reduction.
