Solution

  1. The formation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) in 1949 was a direct response to the growing threat posed by the Soviet Union after World War II.
  2. As tensions between the East and West grew, especially after the Berlin Blockade and the communist takeover of Czechoslovakia, Western countries felt they had to work together right away to protect each other.
  3. NATO established itself as a military union, treating an attack on one member as an attack on all.
  4. This shows that the members are committed to protecting each other. Its goals were to stop the Soviet Union from attacking, keep Western Europe stable, and keep fighting communism as a single front.
  5. During the Cold War, NATO was a key part of making the divide between East and West official. This made the ideological and military rivalry between the USSR and the Western powers even stronger.
