Question
What is the effect of temperature on solubility of a gas in a liquid?
Advertisements
Solution
According to Charles’ law, volume of a given mass of a gas increases with increase in temperature.
Therefore, the volume of a given mass of dissolved gas increases with temperature, making it impossible for the solvent to accommodate the gaseous solute, which then forms gas bubbles.
Hence, the solubility of a gas in a liquid decreases with increasing temperature.
