Question
The graph shows how the velocity of a scooter varies with time in 50 s.
Work out: The distance traveled in 10 s, 20 s, and 50 s.

Solution

The distance travelled in 10 sec is S1 = `1/2`x20 x10 = 100 m
Distance travelled in 10s to 30s is s2 = 20 x (30 - 10) = 20 x 20 = 400 m Distance travelled in 30 s to 5os is S3 = `1/2` x20 x(50 - 30) = 200m.
Total distance covered by scooter is = 100 m + 400m + 200m =700m.

The displacement of a moving object in a given interval of time is zero. Would the distance travelled by the object also be zero? Justify your answer.
Using the following data, draw time - displacement graph for a moving object:
| Time (s) | 0 | 2 | 4 | 6 | 8 | 10 | 12 | 14 | 16 |
| Displacement (m) | 0 | 2 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 6 | 4 | 2 | 0 |
Use this graph to find average velocity for the first 4 s, for the next 4 s and for the last 6 s.
Assertion: If the displacement of the body is zero, the distance covered by it may not be zero.
Reason: Displacement is a vector & distance is a scalar quantity.
