Solution

Commercially, glucose is obtained on a large scale by hydrolysis of starch, which is heated to 393 K under pressure with dilute sulphuric acid.

\[\ce{\underset{Starch}{(C6H10O5)_n}+ nH2O ->[dil H2SO4][393 K, 2-3 atm] \underset{Glucose}{nC6H12O6}}\]

Excess sulphuric acid is neutralized by adding chalk powder. Activated charcoal is used to remove coloured impurities. The solution is cooled, resulting in the separation of glucose crystals, which are filtered and removed.
