f(x) = x3 + 4x2 − 6x + 8, g(x) = x + 1

Step 1: Convert g(x) to (x – a) form

x + 1 = 0

x = − 1

Step 2: Calculate the remainder

f(–1) = (–1)3 + 4(–1)2 − 6(–1) + 8

= –1 + 4(1) + 6 + 8

= –1 + 4 + 6 + 8

= 17
