Solution 1

(3x + 2x2 + 4x3) ÷ (x − 4)

               4x2 + 18x + 75
`x - 4")"overline( 4x^3 + 2x^2+3x+0)`
           4x3 − 16x2
           −      −
                18x2 + 3x + 0
                18x2 − 72x
              −      +
                     75 + 0
                     75x − 300
                    −      +
                              300

So, quotient = 4x2 + 18x + 75 and remainder = 300.

Solution 2

3x + 2x2 + 4x3

Descending order

4x3 + 2x2 + 3x

x − 4

Polynomial Division

`(4x^3+2x^2+3x)/(x-4)`

(i) `(4x^3)/x = 4x^2`

4x2 (x − 4) = 4x2x − 16x2 = 4x3 − 16x2

(4x3 + 2x2) − (4x3 − 16x2) = 18x2

Bring down +3x:

18x2 + 3x

(ii) `(18x^2)/x = 18x`

18x (x − 4) = 18x2 − 72x

(18x2 + 3x) − (18x2 − 72x) = 75x

(iii) `(75x)/x = 75`

75(x − 4) = 75x − 300

75x − (75x − 300)

= 300
