Differentiate between outbreeding and inbreeding.

Solution 1

  • Inbreeding: When breeding or mating takes place between animals of the same breed for about 4–6 generations, then it is called inbreeding. Superior males and superior females of the same breed are identified and mated in pairs. It helps in the accumulation of superior genes and the elimination of undesirable genes. Inbreeding depression is the continued inbreeding, which reduces fertility and productivity. Inbreeding exposes harmful recessive genes that are eliminated by selection.

  • Outbreeding: The breeding of unrelated animals is outbreeding. The offspring formed are called hybrids. The hybrids are stronger and more vigorous than their parents. A cross between two different species with desirable features of economic value is mated. Mules are superior to horses in strength, intelligence, ability to work and resistance to diseases, but they are sterile.

Solution 2

Sr. No. Aspect Inbreeding Outbreeding
1. Meaning Mating of closely related individuals within the same breed for 4-6 generations. Breeding of unrelated animals either within the same breed (no common ancestors for 4-6 generations), between different breeds, or between different species.
2. Genetic Effect It increases homozygosity and helps develop a pure line by accumulating superior genes and eliminating less desirable genes. Increases genetic diversity, overcomes inbreeding depression, and combines desirable traits from different breeds or species.
3. Purpose To maintain and improve specific traits within a breed, producing genetically pure lines. To produce hybrids with combined desirable qualities and greater heterosis (hybrid vigor).
4. Risks It can lead to inbreeding depression, which reduces fertility and productivity with continued inbreeding. Less risk of genetic weakness; may have compatibility issues when crossing distant breeds/species.
5. Examples Mating of superior males and females from the same breed in successive generations. Outcrossing: Mating unrelated animals within the same breed; Cross-breeding: Mating superior males of one breed with superior females of another breed; Interspecific hybridization: mating of two different species (e.g., mule).
