  1. The Graafian follicle is a mature ovarian follicle.
  2. The secondary oocyte is positioned off to the side and is surrounded by a layer called zona pellucida, which is not made of cells and is produced by the oocyte’s vitelline membrane.
  3. There are three layers covering the Graafian follicle. They are as follows:
    1. Theca externa is the name for the outermost protective and fibrous covering.
    2. Inner to it is cellular theca interna which produces the hormone estrogen.
    3. Inner to the theca interna are the follicular cells from the membrane granulosa.
  4. From the membrane granulosa, the cells differentiate into discus proligerus and the corona radiata cells.
  5. Cumulus oophorus is the term used for the oocyte and surrounding granulosa cells.
  6. A fluid-filled cavity called the antrum lies between the oocyte and the membrane granulosa.
  7. It is filled with a fluid called liquor folliculi.
