- The Graafian follicle is a mature ovarian follicle.
- The secondary oocyte is positioned off to the side and is surrounded by a layer called zona pellucida, which is not made of cells and is produced by the oocyte’s vitelline membrane.
- There are three layers covering the Graafian follicle. They are as follows:
- Theca externa is the name for the outermost protective and fibrous covering.
- Inner to it is cellular theca interna which produces the hormone estrogen.
- Inner to the theca interna are the follicular cells from the membrane granulosa.
- From the membrane granulosa, the cells differentiate into discus proligerus and the corona radiata cells.
- Cumulus oophorus is the term used for the oocyte and surrounding granulosa cells.
- A fluid-filled cavity called the antrum lies between the oocyte and the membrane granulosa.
- It is filled with a fluid called liquor folliculi.
