Mathilde's actions indicate that she was a thoroughly changed lady. She had changed her perspective on her living. She had forgotten her hopes of enjoying a wealthy life. She worked hard and saved money to repay her debt. She felt responsible for getting out of the terrible circumstances for which she was responsible.
