प्रश्न
Explain the following concept in your own words with everyday examples:
Distance

उत्तर
It is the actual path length covered by an object during its motion. It is a scalar quantity.
For example, when we go to a mall for shopping from our house and then return to the house, the distance travelled by us would be twice the distance between our house and the mall.

What is your final displacement ?
Figure given below shows a velocity-time graph for a car starting from rest. The graph has three parts AB, BC and CD.

Compare the distance travelled in part BC with the distance travelled in part AB.
Figure shows the velocity-time graph of a particle moving in a straight line.

(i) State the nature of motion of particle.
(ii) Find the displacement of particle at t = 6 s.
(iii) Does the particle change its direction of motion?
(iv) Compare the distance travelled by the particle from 0 to 4 s and from 4 s to 6 s.
(v) Find the acceleration from 0 to 4 s and retardation from 4 s to 6 s.
Draw displacement – time graph for the following situation:
When a body is moving with variable velocity.
Can you suggest the kind of motion of a body from the following distance – time graph?

Under what condition is the displacement of a body equal to the distance traveled by it?
Calculate the distance and displacement in the following case:
Displacement / Time : Velocity :: Speed / Time : ______.
Four cars A, B, C, and D are moving on a levelled road. Their distance versus time graphs are shown in Fig. 8.2. Choose the correct statement.

Assertion: If the displacement of the body is zero, the distance covered by it may not be zero.
Reason: Displacement is a vector & distance is a scalar quantity.
