प्रश्न
Explain the following concept in your own words with everyday examples:
Acceleration

उत्तर
The rate of change of velocity is known as acceleration. It is a vector quantity.
For example, if a car is moving on a straight with variable speed, it will possess some acceleration. In case the speed of the car remains the same but the direction of the car changes, then also the car would be accelerating.

A body falls freely from a certain height. Show graphically the relation between the distance fallen and square of time. How will you determine g from this graph?
From the diagram given below, calculate acceleration.

A cyclist driving at 5 ms−1, picks a velocity of 10 ms−1, over a distance of 50 m. Calculate
- acceleration
- time in which the cyclist picks up above velocity.
A cyclist driving at 36 kmh−1 stops his motion in 2 s, by the application of brakes. Calculate
- retardation
- distance covered during the application of brakes.
Write the SI unit of acceleration and retardation.
A car is moving with a speed of 50 km/h. One second later, its speed is 55 km/h. What is its acceleration?
A car accelerates to a velocity of 30 m/s in 10 s and then decelerates for 20 s so that it stops. Draw a velocity-time graph to represent the motion and find:
The acceleration.
If a body starts from rest, what can be said about the acceleration of the body?
Assertion: A positive acceleration of a body can be associated with the slowing down of the body.
Reason: Acceleration is a vector.
Assertion: A negative acceleration of a body can be associated with speeding up of the body.
Reason: Increase in the speed of a moving body is independent of its direction of motion.
