Ways and Means of Consumer Protection
1. Self-regulation by Business
- Socially responsible firms follow ethical and fair practices with customers.
- Many firms have customer service and grievance cells to handle consumer problems.
2. Business Associations
- Trade bodies like FICCI and CII set a code of conduct for members.
- These codes guide how members should deal with customers.
3. Consumer Awareness
- A consumer who knows his rights and reliefs can speak against unfair practices and exploitation.
- The Department of Consumer Affairs, GOI runs the Jago Grahak Jago campaign for this.
4. Consumer Organisations
- These organisations educate consumers about their rights and protect them.
- They can force firms to avoid malpractices and exploitation.
5. Government
- The government protects consumers through helplines and laws.
- The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 created the CCPA and a three-tier redressal machinery at the district, state and national levels.
