  • Stars are so far away that they act like point sources; tiny, fast changes in air density and refractive index (atmospheric turbulence) shift and flicker their light - we see this as twinkling.
  • Planets are much closer and appear as small discs (not points), so turbulence affects different parts of the disc differently, and those fluctuations average out, making them look steady.
  • atmospheric scintillation makes points (stars) twinkle, while the planets’ apparent size smooths the effect.
