Snell’s law states that when light crosses the boundary between two media, the refractive indices and the angles (measured from the normal) satisfy n1 sin θ1 = n2 sin θ2, so the ratio of sines of the incident and refracted angles equals the ratio of the refractive indices; this law determines whether the ray bends toward or away from the normal and also predicts total internal reflection when a refracted angle would require sin > 1
