Antibodies bind to antigens to promote the destruction of the antigen by various mechanisms; the defence mechanism mediated by antibodies is called the humoral immune response. Secondly, some lymphocytes are activated by antigens to respond without making circulating antibodies, instead working together with macrophages to directly destroy harmful organisms. This defence mechanism is called the cellular immune response.
