INDIANS JOIN GANDHI’S CALL FOR FREEDOM
Calcutta, 1920: Mahatma Gandhi has launched the Non-Cooperation Movement against British rule, calling upon Indians to peacefully withdraw their cooperation from the colonial government. People are boycotting British goods, government schools, colleges, courts, and official institutions.
Thousands of students, teachers, workers, and ordinary citizens are joining the movement. Many Indians are also giving up government titles and encouraging others to support Swadeshi and self-reliance.
A young student said, “I have decided to leave my government school because I want to support our country’s struggle for freedom. We must stand together and peacefully oppose British rule.”
The Non-Cooperation Movement was important because it brought ordinary Indians into the national freedom struggle on a large scale. It challenged British authority through peaceful non-cooperation and strengthened the ideas of unity, self-reliance, and nationalism. Although Gandhi later withdrew the movement in 1922 after the Chauri Chaura incident, it became a major turning point in India’s struggle for independence.
