Solution

The narrator heard the noise in the night every day so he was aware of the sounds. But today, there was something different. He could hear the hiss of hot water, a clatter of dishes from the kitchen, sliding two streets away and the sounds of feet on the wooden bridges on the canals. He also heard the guards and the sound of a foot on stone or a whispered conversation and that’s when he realized that there was something wrong.
