Solution

A line organisation is one in which power is distributed directly from the top to the bottom. All orders and communications run along a scalar chain, which is a straight, uninterrupted line. Because of the continuous vertical links that link each level's responsibilities and tasks to those above and below it, line organisations are also referred to as "scalar" or "hierarchical." Each subordinate reports directly to the superior directly above them, and each superior has total authority over his subordinates. Consequently, there is unity of command. Since the department head is in charge of the subsidiary service functions, each department is self-contained. It is not associated with any distinct staff or advisory units. Every individual at the same level of authority is autonomous.
