Solution

While ethanoic acid reacts with sodium bicarbonate to produce carbon dioxide gas, ethanol does not react with sodium bicarbonate.

\[\ce{\underset{Ethanoic acid}{CH3COOH} + NaHCO3 -> \underset{Sodium ethanoate}{CH3COONa} + H2O + CO2↑}\]
