- High fever; the pattern of fever varies depending on the type of malaria. In benign tertian and ovale tertian malaria, fever outbreaks occur every other day; in quartan malaria, every third day; whereas in malignant malaria, fever is irregular and may occur almost daily.
- Headache and nausea.
- Muscle pains.
- Bouts of fever accompanied by shivering attacks (shivering usually does not occur in malignant tertian malaria).
