Solution

Given: ABCD is a rectangle with AB = 10 cm, AD = 6 cm. AP || BQ.

Step-wise calculation:

1. Parallelogram ABQP:

Base = AB = 10 cm.

The distance (height) between AB and PQ equals AD = 6 cm.

P and Q lie on the line through DC, parallel to AB.

Area (parallelogram) = Base × Height

= 10 × 6

= 60 cm2

2. Triangle ABP:

Base = AB = 10 cm

Height = AD = 6 cm

Area (triangle) = `1/2` × Base × Height

= `1/2 xx 10 xx 6`

= 30 cm2
