Question
In his last letters to two of his sons, Aurangzeb wrote, “I came alone and am going away alone. I know not who I am and what I have been doing. … I have not done well for the country and the people, and of the future there is no hope. I was helpless [in life] and I am departing helpless.” What do these words tell us about Aurangzeb? How do you feel about them?

Solution
Aurangzeb’s letters show his regret over imprisoning his father, killing his brothers for the throne, and causing the deaths of thousands of people during his harsh rule. In his final years, he seems to have reflected on his actions, including the destruction of schools, temples, and cities and the looting that took place during his reign. He admitted that he had not done well for the country and its people. His letters also reveal his loneliness and sadness during the last years of his life, as well as the negative impact of his harsh rule and policies on society.
