Solution
The Paik system gave every able-bodied man the right to receive land in exchange for labour or military service. This provided economic stability and ensured that the king had a ready workforce and army without having to maintain a permanent army, which reduced expenses. However, compulsory service could disturb people’s daily lives and place extra pressure on their families. Overall, the system helped the Ahom rulers build roads, canals, and other important infrastructure while maintaining a strong defence force, as seen in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671. Thus, the Paik system made the Ahom kingdom’s economy and military more organised and effective.
