If the distance between the points (6, 0) and (0, y) is 10 units, find the value of y.

Solution

Given: Points A(6, 0) and B(0, y) with distance AB = 10.

Distance formula:

Distance = `sqrt[(6 - 0)^2 + (0 - y)^2` 

= `sqrt(36 + y^2)` 

= 10

Square both sides:

36 + y2 = 100

⇒ y2 = 64

⇒ y = ± 8
